WESTON, Fla. – Cypress Bay High School in Weston was placed on “secure status” Thursday morning after a “dangerous item” was found on campus, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The city of Weston confirmed on Twitter just before noon that normal operations were resuming.
According to BSO, school deputies investigated the incident and all students and faculty are safe.
BSO said the investigation remains “active and ongoing.”
No other details were immediately released.
Thursday’s incident comes just two days after the school was placed on lockdown for several hours after authorities said a “suspicious item was found on the campus.”
Authorities have not released any further details about the items found Tuesday and Thursday or whether anyone has been apprehended, however one parent told Local 10 News that the principal informed parents in an email that the item discovered Tuesday was a shotgun shell that was found inside a trash can.
Sources told Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela that another shotgun shell was discovered Thursday.
Parents outside the school Thursday told Vela they were frustrated by the limited information they said they were receiving.
“I think that communications are essential in any relationship of trust, and this is probably the most important relationship of trust when you drop your child off at an institution to be taken care of, and taught, and educated and, you know, I think as a parent, if we can’t just get basic information, it creates a lot more confusion and chaos,” Diana Castrillon said.
Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco is hoping for an increase in security to prevent another incident from happening again.
“We have a great number of security people that could be deployed over there (and) helping that mission, you know, have book bags stay home for a little bit,” she said.
Local 10 News obtained the following statement from CBHS Principal Kassandra Fried regarding both incidents:
