Miramar police arrest teen, father in crash that killed pregnant woman, hurt 7-year-old son

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Miramar police announced arrests Thursday in a December crash that killed a pregnant woman and seriously injured her 7-year-old son.

On the afternoon of Dec. 19, 30-year-old Cristina Hernandez was heading home after picking up her son, Jacob, from school.

Police said she was rear-ended by a 16-year-old driving 113 mph under the influence of marijuana, killing her and leaving her son seriously hurt.

“My son is fighting for his life because some kid and his family are responsible and decided to ruin our family,” Anthony Estrada, Hernandez’s fiancé, said at a news conference Thursday.

Estrada is referring to Cristhian Bravo Gonzalez, who police said was driving a brand new Lexus.

The day of the crash, Estrada found out Hernandez was five weeks pregnant, something that was supposed to be a Christmas surprise.

“It was the worst news, it’s just horrible,” Estrada said.

Detectives said Gonzalez didn’t even have a driver’s license.

Officers also arrested Gonzalez’s father, Jose Miguel Bravo De La Torre, on a misdemeanor charge. They said he knowingly allowed his son to get behind the wheel.

Estrada said his son was so badly injured, it’s a miracle he’s alive.

“I now have to teach my son how to eat through a feeding tube, how to walk again,” Estrada said.

Bravo Gonzalez, now 17, faces a number of charges, including vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.
