FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In the wake of an election controversy, Fort Lauderdale city commissioners voted Tuesday night to fire City Attorney Alain Boileau, who has held the position since 2018.
Boileau has worked for the city since 2001, according to his official biography, and took over the top spot 17 years later. He was placed on paid administrative leave for 60 days in advance of his termination.

In a 3 to 2 vote, newly-elected commissioners, including ex-city auditor John Herbst, voted to fire Boileau. Mayor Dean Trantalis and Commissioner Steve Glassman, who were holdovers from the previous commission, voted to retain him.
Herbst, who was fired by the previous commission after conducting a probe into the city’s former police chief and his work hours., was at the center of a residency challenge from a District 1 election opponent.
Boileau had advised the city commission throughout the period of controversy, in which Herbst and two other commissioners weren’t seated immediately.
“Mayor, I just wanted to thank you, Commissioner Glassman, and former commission, it was a privilege serving as your city attorney all these years,” Boileau said Tuesday night. “It’s been a wonderful experience, we accomplished a lot. And we survived a lot.”
In a statement to Local 10 News, a city spokesperson said the city attorney’s office had no comment regarding Boileau’s firing.
