Deputies discover homicide victim after rollover crash in Lauderdale Lakes

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating after a shooting victim was found dead following a rollover crash in Lauderdale Lakes on Friday.

BSO spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis said Lauderdale Lakes district deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a rollover crash call near the 4700 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard.

According to authorities, when emergency crews arrived, they located a two-vehicle crash involving one fatality.

Investigators later revealed the victim as 49-year-old Joseph Copeland.

Deputies said Copeland was traveling westbound in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler on West Oakland Park Boulevard, approaching the intersection of Northwest 47th Terrace, when the crash occurred.

Upon arrival, paramedics immediately began rendering aid to Copeland; however, he was subsequently pronounced dead at the crash site, authorities said.

According to investigators, the victim was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Detectives said the incident also involved a shooting that occurred at some point prior to the car crash. The case was then transferred to BSO’s Homicide Unit for further investigation.
