Only about 30% turnout to vote early in Broward

Election Day: Precincts open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – As of Monday afternoon, about 32% of registered voters in Broward County had cast their ballots before Election Day on Tuesday. More than 200,000 voted by mail and about 188,000 voted early.

From the election headquarters in Lauderhill, Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott said there were 4,000 people working on the midterms.

“A lot of our equipment and supplies are being loaded onto trucks,” Scott said adding that nearly 300 precincts will open Tuesday.

Workers are sorting ballots by precinct, scanning them, and checking signatures.

“We don’t open them until the signature is verified,” Scott said.

The drop box at the elections headquarters in Lauderhill will be open overnight and until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“For a county this size, we need a lot more. We had 25 drop-off locations up until yesterday, and once early voting ended, we’re restricted to only having a drop box at this location and our downtown governmental center office,” Scott said.

Linda Willliams, a Broward County resident, said she had just undergone cataract surgery but she was showing up to vote early because “there is no excuse” not to.

At 95 years old, Anne Naves felt the same way. She still drives and still votes.

“It’s so important because this is a country they have to live in and they need to know how the government works,” Naves said about the importance of having young people vote during the midterms.
