MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Monroe County deputies arrested one of their own Friday, after a detective was accused of battering a colleague inside a sheriff’s substation.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Adam Linhardt said Sgt. Nicholis Whiteman, 38, placed a 46-year-old fellow detective in a “wrestling-type hold without his consent” while the two were inside the Plantation Key substation on Oct. 12.

Whiteman’s colleague sustained minor injuries but remained unable to work as of Friday.
Whiteman is the second MCSO employee arrested this month. On the very same day as the alleged battery, deputies arrested Lt. Patrick Major, who worked at the Plantation Key jail, on an insurance fraud charge in an unrelated incident.
Regarding Whiteman’s arrest, Sheriff Rick Ramsay said that the matter will be “fully investigated” and that he will take “appropriate action.”
Whiteman, who is stationed in the Upper Keys and has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2008 and was promoted to sergeant in 2015, has been suspended without pay.
Jail records didn’t specify when he’ll be arraigned on the misdemeanor battery charge.
