Florida Keys family rescues sea turtle hatchling during Hurricane Ian cleanup

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida Keys family made a surprising discovery as they cleaned up seaweed from a boat ramp following Hurricane Ian.

According to the Florida Keys News Bureau, 8-year-old Khannan Mellies and his family found a green sea turtle hatchling buried about a foot deep in seaweed on Stock Island, located just east of Key West.

His family promptly named the turtle “Ian.”

They took the baby sea turtle to the Marathon-based Turtle Hospital for care and an eventual release back into the wild, the news bureau reports.
