The Red Rooster does Southern food the Overtown way

MIAMI – Chef Marcus Samuelsson took Chef Tristen Epps under his wing to develop an ode to the African and Caribbean influences that contribute to the Black history of Miami’s Overtown neighborhood.

The Red Rooster opened in late 2020 just down the street from the piano-shaped Lyric Theater, in the district that was known in the 1920s as “Little Broadway.”

Epps, a finalist on ABC’s “The Taste,” keeps on getting noticed. Earlier this year, The MICHELIN guide recognized his “good quality” and “good value cooking.”

With this success, the friendly and unpresumptuous venue is serving two Miami Spice preset menus with several choices and optional upgrades.

The $28 three-course lunch menu, served on weekdays, includes three options for the appetizer. The Marcus’ Cornbread comes with jalapeño honey butter. The deviled eggs have chicharron. For vegetarians, there is the Greens and Grains salad with sour orange.

There are four entree options: A chicken fried green tomato sandwich, a crispy bird sandwich, a burger with bacon, and the Mac and Greens with aged cheddar, chive, and black pepper, served with a fresh hammock greens salad. The dessert is a Treat From Tracey.

The $45 three-course dinner menu has more options and it is served every evening except for Fridays and Saturdays. The appetizers are the single-bite deviled eggs with chicharron, The Greens and Grains salad, and the chicken-friend green tomatoes. For $5 extra, the menu includes a tiradito.

The entrees are the Fried Yardbird with sour orange spicy honey and spicy pickled cabbage; and the Roasted Florida Snapper with charred gooseberry salsa avocado, coconut tea, and scattered herbs. For $15 extra, the menu includes the Wagyu Dawadawa Steak with scallion corn sofrito, black garlic jus, and corn espuma.

The dessert is the Viking of The Keys with key lime curd, white chocolate fennel, crémux, almond graham crumble, and Florida strawberries. Drinks are not included. There were reservations available on OpenTable.
