Grieving Broward father hopes for prosthetics, grateful for Local 10 News community

Heartbroken man pushes forward after surviving crash that killed son who would have turned 12 on Friday

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Carlos Hunter embodies resilience and determination.

The 32-year-old grieving father is pushing forward after surviving the June crash that killed his 11-year-old son Carlos in Hallandale Beach, and injured him so severely that he lost both of his legs.

While he has been unable to work, the Local 10 News community turned out to contribute to a fundraiser after a report that reached viewers in South Florida, got hundreds of views on YouTube, and thousands of views online.

“It’s a wonder! I just want to say thanks to everyone who gave,” Hunter said later adding, “Thank you all so much. Continue to be a blessing. Thank you all again.”

Hunter won’t say it, but he still needs all the help he can get. He said he is not sure if health insurance will cover the prosthetic legs that he hopes will help him get back to work.

Hunter said Friday would have been his boy’s 12th birthday.

“Tomorrow my family is going to do something in honor of him,” Hunter said.

The tragic crash followed his decision to stop to help a driver who was on the side of the road along Hallandale Beach Boulevard, police said. Hunter just wanted to show his son the self-respect that comes from helping others. He never imagined the driver of a Jeep would run into them — also killing the stranded driver.

“As long as you are above ground, above the dirt, you try to make a change in life every day,” Hunter said.

The heartbroken father has a long road ahead of him. For more information about how to help support Hunter, visit this page or message Local 10 News’ Rosh Lowe.
