SURFSIDE, Fla. – The Town of Surfside held a gathering Thursday for the official unveiling of “98 Points of Light Way” on Collins Avenue, in honor of the 98 victims killed in last year’s Champlain Towers South collapse.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the Florida Legislature designated that portion of Collins Avenue alongside the building site as “98 Points of Light Way” at the Surfside Remembrance Event on June 24.
Florida State Senator Jason Pizzo, who was the lead sponsor of the legislation, was at Thursday’s event to mark the occasion with some of the victims’ family members, as well as town officials, staff and other members of the community.
“It’s a very nice gesture,” said Pablo Langesfeld, whose daughter Nicole died in the collapse. “It’s a very small token that for us, family members, friends, neighbors – it’s a nice way to honor our loved ones.”
Ideas for a permanent memorial in honor of the lives lost are still being discussed.
