Family, friends mourn woman killed by husband in apparent murder-suicide

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Scrolling through photos of the good times is helping Eboni Preston cope with the tragic loss of her aunt, Vanessa Brown.

ā€œWe all are suffering from this because it was senseless,ā€ Preston said. ā€œI still feel like Iā€™m dreaming because you never expect something like this, ever.ā€

A celebration was planned this past Sunday for Brownā€™s 64th birthday.

After a series of calls went unanswered, her daughter drove to Brownā€™s Richmond Heights home on her special day.

ā€œWhen she didnā€™t get an answer, she said she called the police and when she call the police, she told them, ā€˜I donā€™t know what exactly is going on but my momā€™s car is here, my stepdadā€™s car is here, I just opened the front door with my keys and I see blood,ā€ Preston said.

Brown had been shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at the hands of her own husband.

ā€œHe had killed her, and he killed himself,ā€ said Preston.

A once rocky marriage ended in divorce years ago, but the two were remarried last year.

Loved ones say that signs of trouble persisted, even recently.

ā€œMy message to any woman is get out, get out at the beginning and this couldā€™ve all been avoided had she just not went back,ā€ Preston said.

She and others are choosing to remember the retired longtime postal worker as a fun loving, caring person who put family first.

ā€œShe has so much class, so much cute about herself,ā€ Preston said. ā€œSheā€™s the person you call for order and structure because thatā€™s the way she is.ā€
