Miami-Dade police searching for answers after 17-year-old gunned down

Family identifies victim as Cairi McNear

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police continue to search for the person who fatally shot a 17-year-old boy Wednesday morning in northwest Miami-Dade.

The victim’s grandmother identified him to Local 10 News as Cairi McNear.

“He loved his brothers and sisters. He went to school trying to make something of himself,” Anna Darden said.

Darden said she spoke to her grandson Wednesday morning before he was shot.

“I talked to him and offered to take him to school,” she said. “He told me he was gonna take a Lyft. Thirty minutes later, they tell me this.”

Miami-Dade police said the shooter pulled up to the area of Northwest 71st Street and 15th Avenue around 10 a.m. on a motorcycle before shooting McNear multiple times.

A woman who lives in the area told Local 10 News that she heard at least four gunshots.

Officers arrived a short time later to find the victim already dead at the scene.

McNear’s mother cried out desperately Wednesday as police attempted to comfort her. They remained at the scene for nearly seven hours, speaking to neighbors in the nearby apartment buildings and combing for clues.

Darden watched as her grandson’s body left the area in the back of the medical examiner’s van.

Anyone with further information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
