Detectives warn thieves are increasingly using U-Haul trucks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Thieves in South Florida are increasingly using rental U-Haul trucks to conduct their heists.

Fort Lauderdale Detective Michael Salvati said sometimes the thieves steal the keys from a U-Haul office.

“In some instances, it’s the person that rented the truck, usually from one of the dealers locally,” Salvati said.

Detectives are asking the public to be aware of the trend and take action by staying alert when they see a U-Haul truck and alerting authorities in their area if something seems suspicious.

“They are everywhere. They kind of blend in with the crowd,” Salvati said.

At Southwest 23rd Court in Fort Lauderdale, the driver of a U-Haul recently backed into the driveway of a house that was under renovation. Salvati said the thieves stole a refrigerator, a dishwasher, an oven, and other large items. The case remained under investigation on Friday.
