“Nothing would have prepare(d) us for such horrible tragedy. Nicanor and Gisela were the most beautiful, kind and giving human beings I knew,” the wife of one of the victims’ sons stated in a GoFundMe page that was set up to assist the family with the couple’s funeral expenses.
The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Southwest 18th Street near 20th Terrace.
Local 10 News reporter Trent Kelly was told at the scene that the victims were taken to the hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation, but authorities have not yet confirmed that.
A neighbor said he saw firefighters busting out the back sliding glass window of the couple’s condominium unit, but never saw any flames -- just smoke.
According to Fire Rescue officials, the building was temporarily evacuated after the fire broke out.
They said the damage was mostly contained to the bottom-floor unit where the fire erupted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
