2 hospitalized after fire erupts inside condominium unit

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A fire erupted Saturday morning at a condominium building in Miami-Dade County, sending two people to the hospital, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed.

The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. in the area of Southwest 18th Street near 20th Terrace.

Officials confirmed two people were transported to a hospital.

Local 10 News reporter Trent Kelly was told at the scene that the victims were being treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation, but authorities have not yet confirmed that.

A neighbor said an elderly couple lives in the affected unit. He said he saw firefighters busting out the back sliding glass window, but never saw any flames -- just smoke.

According to Fire Rescue officials, the building was evacuated after the fire broke out, but residents have since been allowed to return to the building.

They said the damage was mostly contained to the bottom-floor unit where the fire erupted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
