NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – A death investigation is underway in North Miami, near the entrance to the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University.
Sky 10 flew over the scene at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 151st Street where a body was covered by a yellow tarp on Monday afternoon.
According to North Miami police, officers responded to a report of a construction accident at approximately 12:58 p.m.
Heavy equipment fell on two men as they were doing work on the roadway, police said.
One of the two men was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was near a piece of construction equipment that appeared to be on its side.
The second victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but authorities have not provided any updates on that person’s medical condition.
The cause of the construction accident is under investigation, police said.
FIU sent an email to students and faculty saying “the incident is not related to the FIU community.”
Traffic was delayed in the surrounding area.
FIU’s email specified:
“An incident near BBC, on Sole Mia Way and Northeast 151st Street, is causing traffic delays for those exiting the campus this afternoon. Only one westbound lane is open to traffic exiting BBC on Northeast 151st Street. North Miami Police are on the scene and may temporarily close all lanes due to the ongoing investigation. All eastbound lanes on Northeast 151st Street heading toward BBC remain open. We ask drivers to be patient as there are significant traffic delays.”
