MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – An early morning crash sent a car into a South Florida canal.
It happened in the area of Northwest 118th Avenue and Okeechobee Road in Miami-Dade County.
According to authorities, firefighters arrived at the scene to find one of the crash victims on an embankment of the canal.
“A good Samaritan actually stoped and pulled the first victim out,” said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Omar Vega.
That Good Samaritan was driving by when they noticed the car in the water. That person stopped and jumped into action, pulling a woman from the water.
Once authorities arrived, divers were quickly in the water pulling out a second victim, a man, according to police.
“Within eight minutes we had the divers in the water,” said Vega.
The man pulled from the water was rushed to a nearby hospital, as was the female victim. The man is listed in critical condition while the woman is stable, according to authorities.
The vehicle that the victims were traveling in was completely submerged when fire rescue workers arrived. There has been no word on whether speed was a factor.
