Man arrested in connection with hit-and-run crash that left teen dead

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 45-year-old man turned himself in to authorities Monday in connection with a hit-and-run crash in northwest Miami-Dade that killed 18-year-old Derek E. Chirinos Betancourt, an attorney for the victim’s family confirmed.

Records show Frederick Howard Bailey faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, driving with a suspended license and tampering with physical evidence.

The crash occurred just before 8 p.m. on the night of Feb. 9, 2020, in the 19600 block of Northwest 47th Avenue.

Miami-Dade police said a Mercedes-Benz C300 struck the teen, who was on his bicycle, and continued north on Northwest 47th Avenue without ever stopping to help the victim.

Surveillance footage showed the dark-colored car speeding in the area and then striking the victim before driving out of frame, leaving the injured teen on the road.

Bailey is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
