Miami-Dade makes ‘very small number’ of appointments for COVID-19 vaccine available at 7:15 p.m.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade County issued the only 2,000 appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine available on Monday afternoon in 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, Martha Haydar, a cancer survivor, drove to Tropical Park without an appointment and authorities turned her away. She will have to try to make an appointment online when more become available.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore, believe me,” Haydar said in frustration.

On Monday night, Mayor Daniella tweeted that the county had “a very small number” of remaining appointments after closing the site to avoid overbooking. The site re-opened at 7:15 p.m. and the slots were gone in minutes.

Miami-Dade County has about 465,000 seniors. Levine Cava said Sunday her administration is working alongside hospitals, cities, and the state to distribute vaccines to as many of them as possible.

“Unfortunately, we do not have the supply to meet the demand”, Levine Cava said.

The Florida Department of Health has 40,000 people on a waiting list for the COVID-19 vaccine, so access to new appointments will be limited until the state is able to deal with the backlog.

“No one is setting appointments unless we actually have the vaccine in place,” said Jackson Health System Carlos Migoya during This Week In South Florida on Sunday.

As of Sunday in Miami-Dade County, 53,833 people had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 9,612 had completed the series, according to FDOH.
