Broward drive-thru coronavirus vaccinations run smoothly despite struggles getting appointments

DAVIE, Fla. – More than a quarter-million people across the State of Florida have received their COVID-19 vaccine.

The demand remains overwhelming, though, and securing a spot in line is proving to be almost impossible for some people.

Vista View Park in Davie has been offering COVID-19 vaccines to those 65 and older with an appointment for the past two days.

Some who received a vaccine Monday spoke with Local 10 News and they said it was a smooth process and that the most they waited in line was about an hour and a half.

“Experience today, it couldn’t have been smoother quite frankly,” said Herman Goldsmith. “It couldn’t have been nicer. It was well run as it could be and they had nine stations waiting for you.”

Drive-thru sites at Vista View and Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek have been ongoing since Sunday.

“I had crossword puzzles,” said vaccine recipient John Phillip, who visited Tradewinds Park. “I packed a lunch. I thought I was going to be here all morning and it turned out to be less than an hour, the whole procedure.”

Phillip said staff members first checked to make sure his name was on the list, then directed him to one of several white tents.

He rolled down the window of his vehicle and received the shot without having to leave his car.

He was given an appointment card with the date he has to come back for the second shot.

The drive-thru sites are by appointment only and getting that appointment online has been a challenge as the website kept crashing.

People who tried to book Monday found a message saying “all appointments have been filled at this time and to check back later as more sites and appointments will be added over the coming days and weeks...”

On Tuesday, a third drive-thru vaccination site will open at Markham Park in Sunrise.

The hours of operation at all three Broward sites are Sunday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
