Florida has now confirmed more than 1 million COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic, becoming the third state to reach that grim milestone.
Only Texas and California have reported more cases, and as of Tuesday afternoon, just 12 countries across the world had self-reported over a million cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. In total, the United States has confirmed over 13.5 million cases.
Florida crossed 1 million after reporting 8,847 more cases Tuesday. Another 82 deaths were also confirmed.
The state is now up to 1,008,166 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 18,679 resident deaths, according to the department of health.
Florida has also reported that at least 237 non-resident deaths have occurred here, and there have been at least 55,197 hospitalizations attributed to the virus since the start of the outbreak.
Perhaps of higher concern than the case total, data trackers are warning of an upward trend in hospitalizations in Florida, including a 30% increase in COVID-19 patients who have needed to be admitted over the past two weeks.
The statewide positivity rate from yesterday’s testing was 8.69%. The 14-day and 7-day average positivity rates are 7.4%.
Deaths confirmed in the past day include four in Miami-Dade County, three in Palm Beach County and one in Monroe County.

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 63.3 million. There have been more than 1.4 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, with over 40.6 million being declared recovered, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.
The United States has passed 13.5 million confirmed cases, with more than 268,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world. Over 5.1 million Americans have been deemed recovered.
