Florida’s health department reported an increase of 8,555 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with 72 more resident deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus.
Florida is now up to 953,300 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 18,157 resident deaths, according to the health department’s dashboard.
The state has also reported that at least 226 non-resident deaths have occurred here, and there have been at least 53,827 hospitalizations attributed to the virus since the start of the outbreak.
The statewide positivity rate from yesterday’s testing was 7.47%. The 14-day average positivity rate is 7.79% and the 7-day is 7.3%.
Deaths confirmed in the past 24 hours in South Florida include seven in Miami-Dade County, one in Broward County and four in Palm Beach County.
More than 1,800 of the new cases reported Tuesday were in Miami-Dade.

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 59.5 million. There have been more than 1.4 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, with over 38 million being declared recovered, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.
The United States has passed 12.5 million confirmed cases, with more than 258,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world. Over 4.6 million Americans have been deemed recovered.
