MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Tuesday that it was investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Miami Gardens.
Troopers said they were dispatched to the corner of State Road 7 and Northwest 204th Street just after 12:30 a.m.
A black Mercedes-Benz SUV and a gray Nissan Altima with major front-end damage were towed away from the scene.
According to investigators, the driver of the Nissan was heading north on State Road 7 before attempting to turn left. Troopers said the car then traveled right into the path of the SUV, causing the crash.
The force of the crash was so great, it took out a nearby light pole, flattened a metal bench and eventually knocked out power to the traffic light.
Local 10 News reporter Trent Kelly was at the scene as first responders appeared to use the Jaws of Life to cut someone out of the silver car.
Troopers said three people who were inside of the Nissan were killed in the collision. The driver of the SUV was taken to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center with minor injuries.
The roadway was shut down for more than five hours as crews worked to clear the scene. Workers later returned to restore power to the traffic light.
The identities of the those involved in the crash have not been released.
