Lightning strikes tower at Miami International Airport

Frequencies, landlines restored quickly, FAA says

MIAMI ā€“ Lightning struck the Federal Aviation Administration tower at Miami International Airport at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The strike affected some radio frequencies and phone lines, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said, but the radar kept operating.

The frequencies and landlines were restored quickly, Bergen said.

"Severe thunderstorms have been affecting flights this evening, and FAA air traffic controllers are working to keep the system operating safely," Bergen said.
