DORAL, Fla. – You'll soon be able to wear a cologne developed by a former Miami-Dade County commissioner.
Former commission chairman Joe Martinez got the idea during a fact finding tour at Concept II Cosmetics, a Doral-based bath and beauty product manufacturer that exports to more than 40 countries.
"It was the typical, 'We're from the government and we're here to help,'" he said.
Martinez helped by suggesting a new cologne for the company based on one he remembered.
"I said I want you to make something like it but I need to put a different twist on it," he said. "I want to musk it down a little bit more, richer you might say."
"He knew what he wanted so we had a very clear direction from the beginning," said Maxim Weitzman with Concept II.
It took about five test formulas before "The Commissioner" was born.
"I love it," said Martinez. "I really like it. I think it's something that people will know."
"[It's] a refreshing, spicy, amber, musky fragrance. Those are the four words that would describe it," added Weitzman.
The cologne is expected to sell for $32 when production starts.
"It's an affordable fragrance, but at the same time, it's very classy, it's very subtle, and we wanted to communicate that with the package," said Weitzman.
"[It's] very affordable, so get them now before the price goes up," added Martinez.
His cologne will soon enter the market and compete against Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.
"I'd like to look at them as my colleagues," Martinez said.
The former commissioner plans on running for Florida's 26th Congressional District, which represents south Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Voters in the district elected U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia in Nov. 2012.
"It's such a foul smelling world sometimes, especially in politics, so maybe if you bring a nice fragrance and aroma to it, it'll lighten up somebody's life," added Martinez.
