JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircrew helped intercept a go-fast boat last month that was carrying more than a ton of cocaine, authorities said.
The bust was made July 30 in the Caribbean Sea with the help of the Colombian Navy.
Authorities said the aircrew detected a suspicious boat in the water and alerted the Colombian Navy, which intercepted the boat.
Authorities said the suspected smugglers began dumping objects overboard to prevent the seizure.
"Our exceptional agents are in a position to expose nefarious activities on the high seas and collaborate with a robust network of law enforcement and military partners committed to denying drug traffickers a safe haven," said Robert Blanchard, director of the National Air Security Operations Center - Jacksonville. "With enhanced interdiction capabilities, we'll continue to provide unparalleled maritime surveillance capabilities."
Authorities said 2,860 pounds of cocaine were confiscated. Three suspected smugglers were taken into custody.
