Train carrying molten sulfur derails in Florida

Nearby residents told to close windows, turn off air conditioning

BARTOW, Fla. – A train carrying molten sulfur derailed Monday morning in Florida.

Polk County Fire Rescue spokesman Kevin Watler said firefighters were returning to their fire station shortly before 2 a.m. when they noticed the derailed train near Lakeland.

Firefighters extinguished a small fire and went door-to-door to notify nearby residents. They were asked to close their windows and turn off their air conditioners.

Molten sulfur was leaking from the train after it derailed in Polk County.

CSX Transportation officials and authorities were working to clean the molten sulfur and remove the damaged train cars.

No injuries have been reported.
