Spc. Carlton Butler was found dead last month inside his barracks

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A North Miami Beach paratrooper who was found dead last month inside his barracks at Fort Bragg died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Army said Monday.

The Army said Spc. Carlton Butler, 22, died on Nov 25, but didn't initially disclose the cause of death.

The Army transported Butler's remains from North Carolina to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Monday. The Army held a short ceremony with Butler's family on the tarmac after his flag-draped coffin was removed from airplane.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Northwest Baptist Church in Miami-Dade County.

Butler grew up in North Miami Beach and joined the Army in 2014.

He was assigned to Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

"Carlton was a patriotic, energetic, and motivated young man, who -- just recently -- had been promoted up to a Gun Team Leader position in Bravo Company, a position he rightly earned," Lt. Col. Graham White, Butler's commanding officer, wrote in a Facebook post.
