Rain causes $450K in damage at Miami Beach Convention Center construction site

Officials say $600 million project will be ready for Art Basel 2017

Construction workers at the Miami Beach Convention Center were rushing Tuesday to complete the four halls in time for the contemporary art work that Art Basel will be bringing from around the world in December.

The $600 million project's general contractor, Clark Construction, suffered a minor set back when Tropical Storm Emily brought hours of heavy rain to South Beach.

"It just peeled off some of the roof and the water came in," said Maria Hernandez, the project director. "There was some temporary roofing that had withstood other storms, but not what we got last week."

The damages -- estimated at $450,000 -- will not delay the project and will be covered by insurance, according to Hernandez.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine said the renovation and expansion of the 58-year-old convention center is set to be completed in 2018.
