Florida man holding "Death to America" sign beaten by couple

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. – A couple was detained after attacking a Florida man who was holding a "Death to America" sign at a street corner.

Action News Jax reports that Charles Brownlett was holding his sign on Plantation Drive in Middleburg, which is situated southwest of Jacksonville.

While holding the sign, which read "Because of Obama's policies" on the back, a passerby in a pick-up truck yelled, "Why don't you leave America?"

According to the police report, Brownlett replied, "Give me a reason."

The pick-up truck then proceeded to park at a nearby McDonald's where a man and woman went inside.  The couple then walked out and towards their truck.

Police say witnessess told them that the man in the truck then yelled at Brownlett, "Actually, I like that sign, give it to me."

The man attempted to grab the sign before tackling Brownlett.  After being separated by an onlooker, the man proceeded to punch Brownlett several times in the face.

The incident was captured on video by several witnesses.

Action News Jax says that deputies had previously received complaints about Brownlett, but that he was in public space on the sidewalk and was not violating any laws.

The couple has been identified and any charges are pending an investigation.
