PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Local 10 News spent months looking over school cafeteria inspection reports and discovered some that don't make the grade.
"I'm gonna cry," a Crystal Lake Middle School parent told reporter Jeff Weinsier.
State records show 14 Broward schools with an "unsatisfactory" on a recent cafeteria inspection.
There were rodent issues at Margate Middle School, Crystal Lake Middle School in Pompano Beach, Silver Ridge Elementary in Davie, and at Hollywood Park Elementary.
Roach issues were found at Forest Glen Middle in Coral Springs, Eagle Ridge Elementary in Coral Springs and Stephen Foster Elementary in Fort Lauderdale.
Country Hills Elementary in Coral Springs had algae growth in the ice machine and there were rodent gnaw marks found at Silver Ridge Elementary in Davie.
"We should be the first to know," said a Coral Springs Middle School parent.
The Broward School District said all of their schools have been re-inspected and have since all passed.
"We take the health inspection very very seriously. Immediately the school staff and the food and nutrition services division put their corrective action plan to work," said Broward School District spokeswoman Tracy Clark.
School cafeterias are inspected four times a year by the Department of Health.
The District said inspection reports are on the schools website and they are posted in the school's cafeteria
But when you click on the inspection on Stephen Foster Elementary School's website nothing comes up.
Margate Elementary has an area to view their latest kitchen inspection report, but it's far from the latest. The report online is a satisfactory one from last May. An unsatisfactory report from September isn't posted.
There is a history of cafeteria reports dating back to 2012 on Hollywood Park Elementary School's website. The problem -- an unsatisfactory report in September isn't there.
In fact, most of the schools with unsatisfactory reports did not have them online for parents to see.
Local 10 News received the statement below from the Broward County School District:
"State law requires schools to post the most recent inspections. When a school receives an unsatisfactory finding, corrective measures are taken immediately to ensure the findings are addressed and that when the cafeteria is re-inspected, the school receives a satisfactory rating.
The most important thing to remember is that all of these issues were addressed immediately. All of the schools passed the subsequent re-inspections by the Health Department and received a satisfactory rating. In some instances, re-inspection occurred with 48 hours of the initial finding(s). As required by state law, the schools have posted the most recent inspection report. As a continuous improvement organization, we will always review our processes and procedures."
There were no roach or rodent issues found for the same time period in a Miami-Dade County District School, but eight schools got an unsatisfactory rating for other issues.
