Dog helps rescue endangered key deer

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – A “good boy” helped in the rescue of an endangered key deer in Big Pine Key.

Heather Skelly was walking with her dog “Ruff” on Monday when he picked up the scent of something nearby.

They then found an endangered key deer stuck in a fence. Skelly called Florida Fish and Wildlife officials but knew the deer was in big trouble and that she had to act fast.

She flagged down a man on a bicycle and they worked together to wedge open the fence and the deer ran into the woods.

The endangered deer is alive today because “Ruff” picked up her scent.
