MIAMI – A 19-year-old man who caused a fatal crash on New Year's Day in 2016 was sentenced Friday to four years in state prison.
Isaias Medina, who was 17 at the time of the crash, will serve 10 years of probation after his prison term and will have his license suspended indefinitely.
Medina faced more than a decade in prison for the fatal crash.
Medina's attorney implored the judge to consider Medina as remorseful, reckless and immature, but not calculated and criminal.
The judge declined a youthful offender sentence, saying "actions have consequences."
Medina was charged with reckless driving causing serious injury and vehicular homicide after the crash.
Miami-Dade police said the teen was speeding in a Porsche on Harbor Drive when he lost control of the car near a curve and struck several trees before crashing into the front gate of a home.
Medina's back seat passenger, Daniela Benavides San Miguel, 18, was killed in the crash.
The young woman's mother told Medina in court that she forgives him for causing her daughter's death.
"It's very important for me that you know I forgive you," Juanita San Miguel said.
Medina apologized through tears to the victim's family.
"If I can go back in time and change my actions, I would," he said. "I simply cannot express the agony and sorrow I feel taking a gift away."
Benavides San Miguel had graduated from Gulliver Preparatory in 2015 and was a freshman at Pepperdine University in California when she was killed.
A passenger in the front seat, Mathew Saldana, 17, was injured in the crash. Medina and Saldana were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with head injuries.
According to a court document, toxicology reports showed that Medina tested positive for marijuana.
