Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said a resident was returning to his home on 41st Street in Marathon when he saw a man walking out the front door. The resident told deputies his home was damaged by Hurricane Irma and the door doesn't lock properly.
The resident yelled at the man, who ran toward a neighbor's house, and called 911. He later discovered that three cellphones were missing, along with size 12 red-and-white Reebok shoes.
A short time later, a deputy was at a convenience store on 55th Street when he saw a man fitting the burglar's description wearing the same size 12 shoes.
Herrin said the man, identified as French, also had one of the stolen phones in his pocket.
