Student brings gun to North Andrews Gardens Elementary School, BSO says

Parents say school tight-lipped about details of incident

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating after a gun was found Tuesday at North Andrews Gardens Elementary School.

"I had to get her out of school," one mother said while picking up her daughter from school.

BSO spokeswoman Veda-Coleman Wright said a student was showing an unloaded handgun to other students, who told a teacher. She said the teacher then reported it to the principal, who had the student remove the items from his backpack, revealing the gun.

Some parents Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore spoke to said they were frustrated because the school administration was tight-lipped about the specifics of the incident and just sent parents a vague telephone message.

"I wanted to know if it was a gun, and if it was in my daughter's class, because if it was, she will not return to this school tomorrow," one woman said.

Coleman-Wright said there was no threat to the school. She said investigators were working to determine how the boy got the gun.

It's unclear whether the boy or his parents will be charged.
