DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A 68-year-old man was attacked on the Fourth of July in front of a Walgreens in Dania Beach, authorities said.
The incident was reported just after 7:30 p.m. July 4 at the Walgreens at 202 S. Federal Highway.
Surveillance video shows the victim walking toward the store entrance when a man with long dreadlocks, who was accompanied by a young boy, approaches him and they exchange words.
Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said it appears that the attacker told the boy to step to the side before he punched the victim several times, knocking him to the ground.
Deputies said the man fled the scene in a red or copper-colored, two-door sedan, possibly a Pontiac.
Witnesses ran over to help the victim, identified as Anthony DePaul, who was unconscious on the ground, deputies said.
"There's no reason the guy should have attacked him the way he did," DePaul's son, Armany DePaul, said.
Anthony DePaul was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
"He's in ICU," Armany DePaul said. "He has bleeding in his brain."
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Detective Kasia Wlodarczyk at 954-321-4291 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
"Who knows what this guy's capable of?" Armany DePaul said.
Detectives said they have yet to speak to the victim because of his condition.
