MIAMI – About 30 pounds of cocaine was found on an American Airlines flight over the weekend that was bound for Miami from Bogota, Colombia, authorities said.
The Hill reported that the plane landed at Miami International Airport Sunday night and was flagged for maintenance. Because the base in Miami was busy, the plane was diverted to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
An airline technician noticed that the insulation in the nose looked different, so he moved it aside and discovered seven bricks of cocaine inside the Boeing 757, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office said.
The 14 kilos of cocaine is worth about $200,000, authorities said.
Based on the large amount of cocaine discovered, detectives believe the drugs were smuggled in by a cartel.
The Sheriff's Office notified the Drug Enforcement Agency, which has taken over the investigation.
