SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Florida – Zoo Miami celebrated the birth of a new giraffe on Wednesday, the 51st born at the zoo in its history.
The unnamed giraffe was born at 11:38 a.m. and already weighs over 100 pounds.
The baby is the fifth born to Mia, a 10-year-old giraffe at the zoo. The baby's father is Titan, who was born at Zoo Miami in 2012.
The newborn baby will remain off exhibit until it can bond with its mother and be safely introduced to the zoo's giraffe herd.
The gestation period for giraffes ranges from 13-15 months and Zoo Miami officials say the mother rarely lies down while giving birth.
