HIALEAH, Fla. — The mayor of Hialeah announced on Tuesday that he was temporarily closing the city’s public pools and keeping a water park closed.
Mayor Bryan Calvo said he wants an expert to conduct a “comprehensive, independent review” of the facilities’ conditions and the city’s aquatics operations.
“When information came to my attention that raised additional questions about our aquatics operations, I made the decision to act immediately,” Calvo, 28, said in a statement released on Tuesday.
Before reopening, Calvo plans to correct the findings of the review and make renovations, according to the city’s statement’
“The condition of many of Hialeah’s aquatic and park facilities reflects years of deferred maintenance and neglect that this administration is now confronting head-on,” Calvo said, adding that he asked the commission “to help find us $5 million to renovate and modernize these facilities.”
The Miami Herald reported the closures followed the Florida Department of Health shutting down a newly reopened water park after finding violations that included a pool without chlorine.

- Babcock Pool at 430 East Seventh St.
- Bright Pool at 760 East 35 St.
- Bucky Dent Water Park at 2240 West 60 St.
- McDonald Water Park at 7505 West 12 Ave.
- Milander Aquatic Center at 4820 Palm Ave.
- Reid Pool at 2245 West Seventh Court
- Walker Pool at 880 West 29 St.
