SUV driven by 92-year-old crashes into Casa Latin Cafe

Incident seen on surveillance video

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 92-year-old driver crashed his SUV into a café Friday morning in southwest Miami-Dade County.

The crash occurred at Casa Latin Café on Southwest 40th Street.

A view from Sky 10 showed a gaping hole in the facade of the business. There was an SUV behind the police tape in a parking space in front of the business.

Allaine Barredo, who runs the Cloud 9 Smoke Shop two doors down from the Casa Latin Café, heard a loud boom and then saw the SUV.

"The car was still in the café," Barredo said. "He was sitting inside. He was super dazed. It was an older man. He was really scared. He was crying."

Surveillance video from Barredo's shop shows the SUV plow through the business.

Police said it appeared the elderly driver accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending the SUV crashing into the business.

Nobody was injured, but Barredo said it could have been worse.

"There's always this bench outside and they always have the neighbor outside smoking his cigarettes," Barredo said. "And luckily he wasn't sitting there at the moment, because he would have been dead."
