HAVANA, Cuba – Cuban authorities are investigating a military plane crash Tuesday in an agricultural area in the Artemisa province's municipality of Güira de Melena.
Witnesses in the area said they saw the pilot's ejection and parachute and feared for the person's safety, but authorities reported no one was injured.
A Cuban military supersonic jet, or Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, crashed after experiencing technical difficulties during combat training, Granma reported.
Rodrigo Huaimachi shared video of a military helicopter flying over the scene of the fiery crash and reported that the jet fighter departed from the San Antonio de los Baños Airfield.
Cuban independent journalist Yoani Sanchez tweeted photos of the plane's remains that she reported were shot by independent reporter Ignacio Gonzalez, of En Caliente Prensa Libre.
