Restaurant owner fatally shot in North Miami Beach

Witness says victim killed in apparent robbery

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A restaurant owner was shot and killed during an apparent robbery early Saturday in North Miami Beach, witnesses and authorities said.

A spokesman for the North Miami Beach Police Department said the shooting took place just before 5 a.m. outside the Styx Sports Bar and Grill at 153rd Street and West Dixie Highway.

A family friend, who did not want to be identified, named the victim as 63-year-old Nathan Julien, a Haitian immigrant who operated the restaurant inside the sports bar. He was leaving work when he was shot, the friend said.

“Sometimes he works seven days a week to provide for his family,” the friend said.

Police would not provide any additional information beyond very limited details posted to the department's Twitter account.
