Driver with suspended license involved in 3 hit-and-run crashes in Miami-Dade, police say

Officers arrest man wanted in string of crashes in Miami-Dade

KENDALL, Fla. – Two people were sitting on a bus bench when John William Fernandez, the driver of a silver Toyota Prius, plowed into them Friday in Kendall, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Joe Sanchez said Fernandez, 42, crashed in the area of North Kendall Drive and Southwest 77th Avenue, near Dadeland Mall.

"One [victim] was under the car," said Jessica Isenberg, who witnessed the crash. "I think she lost her legs."

Fernandez jumped out of the car and ran away, but authorities caught up to him. This was just one of three crashes that authorities say Fernandez caused in Miami-Dade.

"This started on Bird Road where he had one accident," Sanchez said. "Then he continued southbound on the Palmetto, where he had another accident on Sunset Drive."

Sanchez said FHP troopers and Miami-Dade Police Department officers arrested Fernandez at the Kings Creek South Condominium at 7735 SW 86 St. He was arrested for his involvement in hit-and-run crashes with injuries, as well as for driving with a suspended license.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said personnel took the two victims at the bus stop and the victim of another crash involving Fernandez to Jackson South Medical Center.
