Police investigate after several shots fired in downtown Miami

Child present during incident was unharmed, police say

MIAMI – Miami police are investigating after several shots were fired Saturday in downtown Miami.

Officers responded to the area of Northeast Second Avenue and Northeast First Street around 7:55 p.m. after receiving several calls that shots were being fired in the area.

"There seemed to be a fight down by the college. We could hear people screaming," Christina Ulacia said.

Ulacia said she was walking into church with her husband when she heard multiple shots ring out.

"As the gentleman was walking towards, I didn't know that was the person who was shooting, but I did see him turn around and fire shots," Ulacia said.

Police said officers found two victims who said that they were feeding the homeless when they overheard a commotion, according to detectives. They further stated that a man was arguing with a female nearby.

The victims attempted to intervene to assist the female when the man brandished a firearm and shot at them, police said.

Everyone involved ran. Police said as the gunman reached the intersection, he turned around and fired several more shots.

A child present during the incident was unharmed, police said. No injuries were reported.

"Fortunate enough, no one was struck by any bullets, but the situation could have ended a lot differently," said Kiara Delva with the Miami Police Department.

A possible subject was subsequently stopped and detained for questioning at Northeast First Avenue and Northeast Sixth Street, police said. A handgun was found on the suspect.

Police said Northeast Second Street, from Northeast First Avenue to North Miami Avenue, was closed Saturday night. Police advised people to seek alternative routes.

Police said the motive behind the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami police.
