DAVIE, Fla. – Two teenage girls remained in critical condition Monday, days after they were struck by a car while trying to get to a carnival in Davie.
The family of Alicia Cerrato, 15, shared a video of her fighting for her life in the hospital after the Friday crash.
Police said Cerrato and her friend, Andrea De Las Salas, were hit by a car Friday afternoon while crossing Southwest 136th Avenue on their way to the St. Bonaventure Family Festival near their school.
Their classmates at Western High School are praying that they make a full recovery.
"We were all gathered inside and we made a whole video of us praying to her family, and we just really feel for her," senior Elisa Arvaeo said.
Arvaeo said she and her fellow students are devastated by what happened.
Police said the 18-year-old driver who struck them with his Dodge Neon stayed at the scene and has not been cited in the crash.
Police said they do not believe that speed was a factor.
"It's really hard on the school," student Alex Schreiber said. "It's a freak accident. I didn't think anything like this could happen. (I'm) going to take lots of precautions now."
Both victims are freshmen at the high school.
"It could have been any of us. We really have to be careful," Arvaeo said. "We have to double check, and if our parents tell us no, it's for a reason."
