HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Police are investing a crash that was reported late Tuesday night in a Hollywood neighborhood, startling residents, who believe the drivers were racing.
"They race up here every day," Mike Major said.
Residents in the area said the drivers were speeding on Johnson Street before the crash off North 75th Avenue.
"It happened so fast. I was in my underwear. I came out. It was sparking. It was like Fourth of July," Major said "It was crazy, dude. It was like a nightmare."
"All we heard was boom, boom, boom. And we came out and we knew it was an accident. Then I saw a BMW taking off this way," Chris Santos said.
Neighbors said five vehicles were struck and a Florida Power & Light pole was knocked down.
The driver of the car that caused the crash fled the scene, they said.
"Supposedly, the kids were racing down the street and one tried to pass the other and flipped the car, and it spun out and hit those cars. When he got out, he took off running," Santos said. "From what I heard, it was the mom's car and she knew her son was driving it."
Neighbors came out of their homes to survey the damage to their cars.
One father said the crash was too close for comfort, and he feels it is time something is done about the issue.
"It's sad. The whole family was upset," Major said. "The wife, the kids were scared."
FPL crews came out after the crash to replace the pole and restore power to the neighborhood.
Hollywood police have not said whether they know who is responsible for the crash.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
