1 arrested in connection with Bass Pro Shops burglary

More than a dozen guns stolen from Dania Beach store, deputies say

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a burglary that was reported Friday morning at a Bass Pro Shops location in Dania Beach.

Shawn Derival, of Hollywood, faces eight counts of grand theft of a firearm and four counts of armed burglary.

According to an arrest report, Derival and three others broke into the Bass Pro Shops at 220 Gulf Stream Way shortly after 11:45 p.m. Thursday by pushing down a chain-link fence and then breaking two glass windows.

Deputies said the thieves, who were wearing hoodies and cloths to cover their faces, initially tried to smash out a glass door at the back of the business, but were thwarted by the impact glass.

Surveillance video shows them heading to the hunting section once they got into the store.

According to the arrest report, employees remove all handguns at closing time and place them in a vault, but the shotguns and rifles are not put away.

Deputies said the men went back and forth inside the store four times over several hours while stealing the guns.

Detectives said the thieves got away with thousands of dollars' worth of guns, 16 of which were recovered at an apartment near 800 W. Pembroke Road in Hallandale Beach.

Derival was identified by a Hallandale Beach police officer who recognized him in the surveillance video, the arrest report said.

The officer said he has had multiple encounters with Derival and was positive that he was one of the men removing guns from the racks inside the store.

Authorities said Derival confessed to taking part in the burglary. He is being held in lieu of a $8,000 bond.

Detectives are still searching for three others involved in the burglary.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
