BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A small plane made an emergency landing Wednesday in a remote area of Broward County near Everglades Holiday Park shortly after its pilot made a mayday call.
The single-engine Piper PA-28 made the emergency landing on a levee about two miles west of U.S. Highway 27.
Sky 10 was flying above the plane, which appeared to have made a crash landing along a dirt road running parallel to a canal.
Two people standing next to the plane appeared to be OK. A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman later confirmed that there were no injuries.
Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol said a flight student and instructor were flying back to North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines when the engine quit. The instructor took over and landed the plane.
The plane had a Wayman American Flight Training logo on it.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrived a short time later.
Margol caught up with the pilot and student as deputies brought them to Everglades Holiday Park. Both appeared to be a little shaken up but were doing OK.
The director of operations for Wayman American Flight Training said he's happy to see them both safely on the ground.
"Got to go with first instinct -- whenever we're in a situation, that's what we train as pilots – got to go with your first instinct, the safest instinct," Wayman Luy said.
The FAA is investigating.
