PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Two men were struck by lightning Tuesday afternoon at a construction site in Pembroke Pines, one of whom died, authorities said.
The incident was reported at about 1:30 p.m. at 103rd Avenue and Pines Boulevard, where construction is underway for a massive city center, complete with restaurants, retail stores and a new city hall.
Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue spokesman Ruben Troncoso said one man in his 30s was possibly directly struck by lightning and went into cardiac arrest.
He said the unconscious man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he was originally listed in serious condition.
He died later at the hospital, authorities said.
The other man was not directly hit and was conscious, Troncoso said.
That victim was also taken to Memorial Regional Hospital. Authorities said he complained of numbness to his body.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two construction workers involved in today's unfortunate accident," Pines City Center spokesman Tadd Schwartz said. "The matter is being reviewed by the proper authorities and the contractor on-site is cooperating in that process."
The victims' identities have not been released.
