MIAMI – After complaints of thefts during searches, Miami police Officer Jose R. Acosta was arrested Friday night, according to sources in the Miami Police Department.
After an undercover sting, the 22-year-old police officer, who had only been with the department since May 2016, was arrested on charges of armed burglary of conveyance and armed grand theft.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was involved in the investigation. Miami Deputy Chief of Police Luis Cabrera confirmed the arrest Saturday night.
"The city of Miami Police Department will not tolerate actions that betray the oath of our office as public servants and contradict our duty to serve and to protect our communities," Cabrera said.
Miami's Fraternal Order of Police President Lt. Javier Ortiz said they would hold a news conference to discuss Acosta's arrest at 2 p.m. Monday.
"It is disheartening when one of our own betrays the oath they took. Along with FDLE we have arrested one of our officers," the department said on Twitter.
The arrest follows the department's firing of three other rookie police officers -- Kevin Bergnes, Miguel Valdes and Bruce Alcin -- after they were accused of joking about using the city's primarily black neighborhoods for target practice.
